Our Stories

A LEGEND IN THE WALLS

In the early 1920s, when Detroit was the epicenter of prohibition-defying innovation, a small, hidden bar on Michigan Avenue became known for more than just its elixirs. Legend has it that The Lager House Speakeasy hosted gatherings of artists, musicians, and even factory workers fresh off their shifts at the Ford plant, all united under a single, dimly lit ceiling. Rumor says a secret door behind the bar still holds messages scrawled by patrons from the roaring ‘20s. We invite you to raise a glass and be part of that story. Who knows what you’ll add to our walls?

During prohibition, Detroit’s underground was flooded not only with spirits but with stories. One local legend we love to share is about ‘Detroit Dan,’ a figure known for running contraband from Windsor, Canada to The Lager House. He’d slip through secret tunnels and alleys by night, arriving here with barrels of lager that were served under the guise of ‘factory goods.’ Dan may be gone, but his adventurous spirit lives on in every pint we pour today. Join us for a drink, and you might just feel his spirit as you step back in time.

A hidden gem in Detroit! The ambiance is enchanting, and the drinks are exceptional. Can’t wait to return!
